Job description
Quoted in full from Sportyard's job posting. Gavroche does not edit it.
Sportyard is a sports entertainment and training facility in Charleston built around competition, challenges, trick shots, games, and athletic experiences.
We're building a media brand around what happens inside Sportyard — and we're looking for a video editor who can turn raw footage into videos people actually want to watch.
This is not primarily a graphics or cinematic editing role. The goal is retention.
We want someone who understands how to find the hook, eliminate dead time, build tension, create curiosity, and deliver a satisfying payoff.
What Success Looks Like
Your job is to help us consistently publish videos that:
- Grab attention in the first 1–2 seconds.
- Give viewers an immediate reason to keep watching.
- Turn simple sports competitions and challenges into compelling stories.
- Maintain strong pacing without making every video feel over-edited.
- Build anticipation around the outcome or payoff.
- Generate shares, comments, followers, and repeat viewers — not simply views.
- Develop recognizable Sportyard content formats that can be repeated and scaled.
- Help identify which concepts and editing styles deserve to become recurring series.
Requirements
What You'll Own
You'll take raw footage from Sportyard shoots and turn it into finished content for:
Instagram Reels / YouTube Shorts / TikTok
- Typically 15–60 seconds
- Challenges
- Trick shots
- Competitions
- Races
- Sports games
- Athlete/guest collaborations
- Behind-the-scenes moments when there's a compelling story
YouTube
- Longer challenge and competition videos
- Multi-game competitions
- Approximately 3–8 minutes initially
- Story-driven edits rather than simple highlight reels
You won't always receive a detailed shot-by-shot script.
You'll be expected to watch the footage, understand what actually happened, and determine the strongest way to tell the story.
Editing Skills
You should be comfortable with professional editing software such as Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or equivalent.
Experience with the following is helpful:
- Vertical short-form editing
- YouTube editing
- Captions and motion graphics
- Sound design
- Music selection
- Color correction
- Multi-camera footage
- Sports or action content
Fancy effects are a bonus.
Storytelling instincts are more important.
Benefits
- Unlimited Sportyard membership
- Join a team that values preparation, accountability, and energy — not just showing up
