Job description

Quoted in full from Karman+'s job posting. Gavroche does not edit it.

Karman+ is building the first logistics chain in space for the regolith age. Today everything we use in orbit — fuel, water, materials — is launched from Earth, which keeps every mission slow, expensive and small. Asteroids already hold those resources in orbit. We build the spacecraft and systems to go get them.

Our first mission launches in 2028 to rendezvous with the asteroid Apophis — a deep-space mission designed, built and tested by our team in Broomfield, Colorado, on a startup timeline and budget. We develop most of our own hardware, from power and propulsion electronics to RF systems and payloads, and we test it in our own facilities.

Why this posting exists

We hire for specific roles when we can define them. We also know that some of the best people we’ll ever work with don’t fit a job title we’ve written yet. If you’re a great engineer who wants to build spacecraft that go do things that matter, tell us who you are and we’ll figure out where you fit.

What an asteroid mining company builds

Over the next few years the work spans, roughly: spacecraft avionics and flight software; power systems from solar arrays to high-voltage buses; electric and chemical propulsion; RF and deep-space communications; guidance, navigation and control, including autonomous operations around a small body; structures, mechanisms and deployables; thermal; surface probes and scientific payloads; mission design and trajectory analysis; the test infrastructure — thermal vacuum, vibration, cleanrooms — that proves all of it; and, further out, the extraction, processing and in-space transfer hardware that turns an asteroid into a supply depot. Manufacturing, test and quality engineers who make flight hardware repeatable are as important to us as designers.

Requirements

What “great engineer” means to us

  • You’ve taken something hard from an idea through to a working, tested thing and can walk us through what broke along the way.
  • You’re deep in at least one discipline and curious enough about the neighbouring ones to work the interfaces yourself.
  • You reason from first principles, check your own numbers, and say “I don’t know” before you say “it’s fine.”
  • You own outcomes: requirements, design, suppliers, test, documentation, and the conversations when something slips.
  • You’d rather make a decision with 80% of the information than wait for the rest.
  • You’re comfortable on a small team where the work is visible and the mission depends on it.

Spaceflight experience is valuable but not required. People from aerospace, automotive, robotics, energy, semiconductors, research labs and serious hobby projects have all turned out to be exactly who we needed.

How to apply

Send a CV and a short note — a few paragraphs — on the hardest thing you’ve built or fixed and what you’d want to work on here. No cover-letter formalities. If something you’ve built is public, link it.
